Council tax and business rates

The council will be flexible in helping people to pay their bills and will usually accept payment by 12 monthly installments, if requested, instead of the usual 10. We will also try and help where possible by spreading any arrears over the remaining months of the financial year.

The Citizens Advice Bureau helps people resolve their money and other problems by providing practical, up-to-date information on a wide range of topics, including benefits and housing, employment rights and discrimination, debt and tax issues.

If you are currently in receipt of housing and council tax benefit but have an outstanding overpayment with us, and you are struggling to meet your rent or council tax, then contact the council straight away as we may be able to reduce the amount we take from your benefit. These counsellors use a variety of techniques. It could be simply negotiating with creditors to freeze your interest; you may be put on a debt management plan, where they negotiate with your creditors. They will certainly show you how to prioritise the most important debts to enable you to keep food on the table and a roof over your head.
