Use of Pictures, Logos and other Images

Image Standards

Keep the use of graphics to a minimum. Avoid the use of pointless graphics which are not relevant to the information on the page. If you do use graphics within your pages you must follow these standards:

  • The majority of graphic images, for example diagrams, should be stored in gif format
  • All photographic images should be stored in jpg format
  • gif and jpg are the only image types to be used. Do not use bmp, png, tif and so on
  • Make sure you put a descriptive <alt> tag on all images – this is mandatory in the content management system
  • An <alt> tag must be no longer than 100 characters
  • Don't use graphics to represent text, for example banners - this leads to problems with the text-only version, and slows the page download
  • Text in maps must be clearly legible
  • Avoid using pictures as links
  • Only use web-safe colours from the 216 web colour palette for text in, for example, maps
  • All pages must be clearly legible when viewed in only 16 colours
  • The total file size of all graphics within a single web page should not exceed 30kb.
  • Images should not be used to convey textual information
  • Any complex images conveying detailed information should be linked to a text description
  • Make sure that Bracknell Forest Borough Council owns the copyright and has data protection permission for all images. Advice on copyright is available from Communications and Marketing.

Image Size and Download Times

Large graphics will cause pages to download very slowly. You might not notice the difference at work but if you try to view such pages from home, the story might be completely different.

Key points about images:

  • The total file size of all graphics within a single web page should not exceed 30kb
  • Include no more than two images on any one web page
  • The maximim physical size of an image used in the main text areas is 175 x 175 pixels

Consent for Pictures of Children and Young Adults

Generally, it is essential that proper consent has been sought and obtained for all pictures which might be used by the council. Special considerations apply when you take photographs of children and young people which might be used on the internet. This applies to all children and young people. Contact Communications and Marketing for further details.

Clip Art and Animations

Clip art images and animations must not be used on the website. Clip art images are tacky and animations can cause accessibility issues.

Photographs

If you commission or take your own photographs for the site, make sure the photographer or you use the appropriate data protection form (available from Communications and Marketing and the intranet).
