GerberaBracknell Flowers 2008 Wins Regional Accolade

Judges from the Royal Horticultural Society toured Bracknell on 17 July visiting many sites including:

At the announcements of the 2008 Thames and Chilterns in Bloom competition Bracknell Flowers 2008 achieved the following successes:

  • Winner of the Large Town/Small City - Thames & Chilterns in Bloom Silver Gilt Award.
  • Highly Commended Certificate for Ranelagh School

Bracknell bannerRepresentatives from both Bracknell Town Council and Bracknell Forest Council attended the awards ceremony held in Milton Keynes on 3 September to receive the winners' trophy and certificates. During the announcement special mention was made of Bracknell's efforts to increase urban biodiversity on the town's roadside verges, the contribution of Bracknell & District Gardening Club and the use of recycled water from local company Boehringer Ingleheim to maintain the floral displays.

We have started to cut the long meadow grass on these sites as the wildflowers have now finished flowering and set seed ready for next year. The long grass is collected and taken away to be composted which helps to keep the soil nutrient levels as low as possible as this encourages wildflowers. Please note that when the grass is short we remove the butterfly signs but they will re-emerge next spring for residents to enjoy.
