Food premises - approval

EUGO logoIf you operate food premises you may need to be approved by your local authority.

Examples of types of premises that are required to be approved by local authorities are stand alone (such as not attached to a slaughter house, cutting plant or game handling establishment):

  • meat processing/preparation plants
  • minced meat processing operations and mechanically separated meat processing plants
  • cold stores
  • dairy processing plant
  • egg production sites
  • fish processing/preparation plants

Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs

Regulation (EC) No 853/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 laying down specific hygiene rules for food of animal origin

It is in the public interest that we process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from us within 28 days, please contact us. You can do this online if you applied through the UK Welcomes service or by using the contact details on this page.

Complaints about food premises

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the trader by you - preferably in the form a letter (with proof of delivery). If that has not worked, if you are located in the UK, Consumer Direct will give you advice. From outside the UK please contact the UK European Consumer Centre.
