Cooling Towers

The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condenser Regulations 1992 require the notification of wet cooling towers and evaporative condensers to local authorities in whose area the equipment is situated, regardless of whether the local authority or Health and Safety (Executive) is the enforcing authority. The Regulations also require notification to the local authority of the closure of the device.

The reason that notification is necessary is the potential for Legionella Pneumophia bacterium (Legionellosis) to be found in many recirculators and water supply systems. The main purpose of the requirement is to assist inspectors in investigating Legionella outbreaks thought likely to have arisen from wet cooling towers or evaporative condensers.

Please notify us of wet cooling towers and evaporative condensers by using our cooling towers notification form, which you can download from the right-hand side of this page. When you have completed it, please print it off and post it to us using the address on the form. There is no charge for notification.

The list of cooling towers is currently under review. If you have any queries about cooling towers please contact a member of the Environmental Health Commercial Team on 01344 352000.
