Road safety - pedestrian crossings

To encourage people to walk and to improve safety, the council installs pedestrian facilities, such as controlled crossings and islands, where appropriate.

Requesting a new pedestrian facility

We receive many requests each year for new facilities. To help us use our resources efficiently each site is assessed and the results are considered to identify the most needy locations.

The main factors measured are the number of people crossing and the amount of traffic. Other factors include the number of accidents where injuries are involved, the speed of the traffic and local features that attract pedestrians, such as hospitals, schools and shops.

If you would like us to consider a new pedestrian facility, please provide reasons for your request.
