Traffic signs and markings

The council is responsible for installing signs and road markings to direct traffic and to provide warnings to drivers of hazards ahead.

The signs and markings that may be used on the public highway are controlled by government regulations. These cover the design of the signs, where they can be used and whether they must be illuminated.

All signs on the highway must be authorised by the council. If you want to request a new sign, please contact us stating your reasons.

The maintenance of existing traffic signs and road markings is looked after by the highway maintenance section. They can arrange for the replacement of missing or damaged signs and are also responsible for cleaning them.

You can report damaged signs by completing our online form.
