Pupil Referral Service

We are committed to providing suitable education for pupils who, for a variety of reasons, are not able to receive education in school. When young people are excluded from a secondary school they may be reintegrated into another mainstream school, but some pupils will only learn in a particular teaching environment, which the Borough Council intends to create within the Pupil Referral Service.

The Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) opened in the Autumn Term 1999 at College Hall, in Old Wokingham Road, where young people aged between 11 and 16, many of whom will have been excluded from schools in the area, will receive part-time or full-time education.

College Hall will have more pupils on roll than will attend in any one session of the day. This is because some will attend part-time, others will be on work experience and others will be receiving education elsewhere, for example on partial reintegration into mainstream school or in a college of Further Education. It is anticipated that some 60 pupils may receive education out of school. College Hall will have about 15 pupils who attend any one session during a week.

In its second phase, it is expected that the Pupil Referral Service will be able to provide support to pupils who are at risk of exclusion, perhaps through part-time attendance at College Hall and at their own school; working in such a way would assist in meeting targets for the reduction in exclusions.

In addition, Adastron House PRU will continue to offer part-time placement for primary-age pupils who are experiencing behavioural difficulties in their mainstream school. Such pupils will remain on the roll of their mainstream school.

A number of pupils will continue to receive tuition through the Home Teaching Service (HTS). The HTS includes provision for pupils in their own home, a school - for example where a school refuser is receiving individual tuition outside mainstream classes - or Cressex Lodge, which is an assessment centre for looked-after children.
