Sites of the Season

Jason Parnwell: A pair of damselflies at Larks HillSummer is a vibrant season when life is active and new growth is everywhere!

Discover the best that nature has to offer at this time of year.

Bracknell Forest is an ideal place to explore during the summer months, a prime time for observation, walks and picnics.

Our rangers recommend:

Larks Hill

Come and experience the colourful summer show of the bee and butterfly attracting plants such as sweet clover, birds foot trefoil and red campion helping to encourage wildlife and bring nitrogen back into our arable fields.

The site also boasts an orchard of around 100 apple, pear and plum trees and fine views over the surrounding countryside.

Picnic benches are located throughout the site and the hoggin paths are predominantly suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Just the thought of a quiet amble alongside the cool River Blackwater makes this the perfect place to visit on a hot summer’s day. A wet wildflower-rich meadow and woodland complete the experience by adding colour and vibrance to the site which also links up with Sandhurst Memorial Park

Look out for posted events such as the guided tours and fun activities at Shepherd Meadows throughout the summer months.

Wildmoor Heath

On a warm summer evening, views over the large areas of heathland are just glorious - just the place to bring a picnic!

Dominated by plants such as heathers, gorse and heathland grasses, this lowland heath supports a whole array of wildlife from the golden ringed dragonflies to rare birds, and bats who swoop in at dusk to feed.

Englemere Pond

Englemere Pond - Reed Bed by Anna RobertsIf you love to observe nature then this is the place to visit!

The warm days of summer bring out the brightly-coloured dragonflies and the fine evenings are ideal for watching feeding sand-martins and swallows swooping low over the water. At dusk hunting bats emerge from their roosts and you may even be lucky enough to spot a grass snake in the reed beds.

Englemere pond is also part of the Rambler’s Route

Have you spotted any interesting wildlife on your visits? Help us to learn more about our local wildlife and record your sightings online via the biodiversity web pages.

This year’s parks photo competition is on the theme of Biodiversity in Bracknell, so check the rules via this web page, and take your camera along when you are visiting sites in the borough.
