Passport Changes

PassportThere are so many things to organise when getting married or forming a civil partnership, that it is easy to overlook getting your passport changed.

A person who is going to be married or forming a civil partnership in the UK, and who will be going abroad immediately after the ceremony, can apply to the UK Passport Service for a new ten year passport to be issued in their new name up to three months in advance of their ceremony date.

The passport would be post-dated to the date of the ceremony, and will not be valid for use until the applicant’s ceremony has taken place.

If you are travelling abroad for your honeymoon, remember to book any travel tickets in the name you will have in your passport immediately after the ceremony.

When you can change your passport

You can arrange to change your name in the passport up to three months prior to the ceremony, although you will not be able to use the new passport until the actual day of your ceremony. However, you can have the PD2 application form completed in advance of the three months, and this must be completed by the Superintendent Registrar (or deputy) in the district of the ceremony.

How to change your passport

If you want your passport to be changed in time for your honeymoon, you will need to apply to the passport office for them to issue a new UK passport which will be valid from the date of your ceremony. Along with the passport application form, you will need to send a PD2 (available from the Post Office).

Other points

The Consulates of some countries cannot grant visas on post-dated passports. If you require a visa to travel the UK Passport Service advises you to check with the consulate of the country you will be travelling to before booking your holiday.

If you hold a valid passport but do not wish to replace it with one showing your new name, you can continue to use your current passport and take your marriage or civil partnership certificate with you when you travel. However, please note that some countries may insist that the details on your travel documents correspond to those in your passport. Again, the UKPS advises you to check with the consulate of the country you will be travelling to before booking your honeymoon.
