Think Family
The Council and its partners wish to improve support to families and is promoting a culture of ‘Think Family’ that thinks about families as a whole, rather than individuals, recognises the importance of the family unit and, where interventions are involved, aims to address underlying issues through joined up interventions.
For families most in need, a Family Intervention Projects (FIP) is available that is linked particularly to youth crime, those at risk of offending and anti-social behaviour and nuisance in local communities. The aim is to provide intensive support to both reduce pressures on the family and increase capabilities.
Existing work on early intervention is being enhanced by providing additional capacity to provide structured group programmes to strengthen and support families when risks emerge with children aged 8 to 13. These are known as Parenting Early Intervention Programmes (PEIP). This work builds on existing programmes of support for parents
Family services are also available for everyone to access - the ‘Think Family’ approach recognises the family interventions already taking place through children’s centres and extended schools including, respectively, family outreach workers and family support advisers. Support is also available from health visitors and school nurses, the Family Information Service and other partners in the statutory, community and voluntary sectors.
