Direct Payments
Independence, it's something we all value. For people requiring support from Social Care Services Direct Payments can be the key to independence and choice.
Put simply, Direct Payments is money that Adult Social Care can give you, so that you can purchase your own support. It puts you in control and allows you to have the independence that so many people take for granted.
Because Direct Payments are paid directly to the individual needing support, it allows them to have more independence, freedom and choice. The money is available to those individuals who would like this increased independence and are able to manage the payments with or without help.
Most people who are assessed as needing help from Adult Social Care have a right to receive Direct Payments. This includes:
- Carers
- Older people
- Parents of a child with a disability
- People with a disability aged 16 years and above
- People with mental health needs
The amount of money you could get would depend on the support you are assessed as needing. If you are assessed as needing to pay a contribution towards your services, this will not be any different if you have the services arranged for you or if you decide to choose Direct Payments.
Direct Payments are not treated as income and so are not taxable, because of this they do not affect any benefits you may receive.
