Sensory Impairment Strategy

Commissioning Strategy for People who Experience Sight or Hearing loss or who are Deafblind

The Council has recently published a five year commissioning strategy for people with a sensory impairment.  Over the next 5 years the population of Bracknell Forest aged over 65 years is expected to increase by 20% (2,700 people).  This is the age group who are more likely to develop a sensory impairment and we need to plan support and services to ensure we are able to meet needs and expectations.

FAQs

1. What is a commissioning strategy?

A commissioning strategy takes an overall view of individuals’ needs and the needs of the community. Using this information, the Council then looks at how they can help people to have choice and control over the support they need. This could be by making agreements with local service providers to meet those needs, and enabling people to choose support they feel will make a difference to their lives.

2. Who was involved in the development of the commissioning strategy?

We involved people with a sensory impairment,  carers, voluntary organisations and other organisations who provide support. We conducted interviews, and people told us what they thought about the support currently available and where the gaps were. We then consulted widely on these findings to make sure that we had heard all the important messages.

3. How did you identify the priorities in the strategy?

We took on board people’s views and experiences of existing support for people with sensory impairment and this informed our priorities. We also included other important factors such as information the government told us about how support should look in the future.

We also looked at the population of Bracknell Forest and how this may change over the next 5 years.  We considered how many people are likely to experience sensory loss over the next 5 years and thought about how we could reduce some of the risk factors and improve existing support and services.

By gathering all this information, we were able to assess the needs of people with a sensory impairment and their carers in Bracknell Forest and plan for the future.
