Homelessness - Advice and Support
There are many reasons why people become or risk becoming homeless:
- They may lose their job, get into arrears with their mortgage or rent and their home may be repossessed
- They may be unable to continue living with friends or family, because of overcrowding, a relationship breakdown or violence
- They may have left hospital, prison or care, and have nowhere to go
- Their landlord may have given them notice to leave
- Loss of accommodation on leaving HM Forces
In all cases of homelessness or threatened homelessness, the council's housing options team can provide advice about options for re-housing. This might be helping a single person get a room in a shared house, or in a supported housing scheme, or helping a family to secure private rented accommodation through the council's rent deposit scheme. Alternatively, it might mean mediating on behalf of a young person with their parents to enable them to return home.
It may also mean helping someone to apply for a housing association home through BFC my choice. It is important that you contact the housing options team as soon as you think you may become homeless so the council will have as much time as possible to try and help you.
Please see the link on the right for information about what you should do if your landlord tells you to leave.
