What does the e+ card do?

e+ cardCurrently the e+ card already has a number of applications but the Borough Council is continually pushing forward the boundaries of smart card technology looking for new ways to use the card to improve services. As these new applications are added, your e+ card will provide you with these services. The technology behind the e+ card also allows the Borough Council and its partners to offer Bracknell Forest residents extra special offers and reduced charging for certain services.

Today your e+ card can offer these uses and benefits:

Library card

Using an e+ smartcard in the libraryThe e+ card replaces the old style library cards and allows users all the same features of a traditional library card – borrowing books, hiring CDs, DVDs and videos, and using the libraries’ free internet service to surf the internet and reserve and renew books.

Leisure card

The e+ card is also used as a membership card at Bracknell Leisure Centre, Edgbarrow and Sandhurst Sports Centres and The Downshire Golf Complex.

Membership details are accessed more quickly with the e+ card, allowing the cardholder to spend less time queuing because of the electronic chip. Online booking is also now available to e+ card holders for certain leisure activities.

Concessionary Bus Pass

The e+ card is used as a concessionary fare pass by people over 60 and disabled people on local buses. For more information on how to get a pass, please visit our Applying for a Travel Concession page or contact Customer Services on 01344 352000.

Proof of Age

The e+ card Programme has been awarded nationally recognised PASS scheme status for proof of age. For e+ card holders aged 10 to 21 years who verify their date of birth, the PASS hologram and date of birth are printed on the card.

The verified date of birth is held inside the card’s chip and, using a small electronic card reader issued by the council, licensed traders across the borough can now quickly confirm the cardholder’s age.

Shopping with the e+ smartcardThe e+ card offers dozens of deals and discounts in over 150 shops, restaurants, leisure attractions and businesses in Bracknell, Crowthorne and Sandhurst.

Simply show your e+ card before payment at participating shops and stores to make savings on your shopping or lessen the cost of your leisure activities.

Cashless payment for school meals

The e+ card is used as a cashless catering card by students and staff in one of the borough’s secondary schools. The amount of cash pupils need to carry around school is less, reducing the chance of them being bullied or losing their money.

Cashless transactions are faster so shorten queues at the tills. Minimising the amount of cash handled by catering staff is also more hygienic.

Funds are loaded into the pupil’s school meal account through the school office or by students inserting the card into cash loading machines on the school site. Parents can pay in a sum for a week, a month or a term at a time and limit the daily spend on their child’s card.

Those students entitled to free school meals automatically have their meal allowance credited to their e+ card each day. All e+ cards look and work the same way so nobody needs to experience the stigma previously associated with mealtimes.

The possibilities for smart card technology are considerable. Working in partnership with other organisations the Council hopes to explore these possibilities for the benefit of all those living in, working in or visiting Bracknell Forest.
