Paying the Council Tax
Council Tax is payable in ten monthly instalments in a complete financial year. Payments are due on the first day of each month between April and January. However, the number of monthly instalments is reduced as the year progresses. In some circumstances there may be only one instalment, such as a closing bill to the date the property is vacated or sold, or a bill issued after 31 December in any financial year.
If you are a tenant, the Council Tax is payable separately from your rent payments.
We recommend that you pay by monthly direct debt. There are many advantages of this method of payment, as it:
- is an easy and convenient way to pay
- makes writing cheques unnecessary
- saves sending payment by post or waiting in queues
- carries a guaranteed refund in the unlikely event of error
Also, both you and the Council will benefit because direct debit helps us keep down the costs of collecting the tax.
If you do not wish to pay by direct debit you will have to make your own arrangements.
