Discounts - Carers

A carer must live in the same property as the person for whom they are providing care and must provide, on average, more than 35 hours of care per week. For Council Tax purposes someone caring for their spouse, partner or a child under the age of 18 would not be classed as a carer.

To qualify as a carer, in addition to providing 35 hours care per week, the person being cared for must be receiving one of the following state benefits:

  • Higher rate attendance allowance
  • The highest rate of care component of a disability living allowance
  • The appropriately increased rate of disablement pension
  • An increased in a constant attendance allowance

To apply for this discount please write to Revenue Services to advise us that the person being cared for is over 18 years of age, is not the spouse or partner of the carer and that the carer provides at least 35 hours of care per week. We must also see confirmation that one of the required state benefits is being paid to the person receiving the care.
